Chinese New Year starts from the first day of the first lunar month to the 15th day. On the 15th Day, we also call it the Lantern Festival. Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, it is also called “Yuan Xiao”. In 2026, we will celebrate it on March 3rd. On this special day, families and friends stay together to celebrate it.
The Lantern Festival is about family, happiness, and hope. It is a time to wish for good luck and blessings in the new year. The bright lanterns symbolize light and guidance for the future. People believe that the full moon on this night brings unity and harmony to everyone.
In different places of China, we have different tradition on Lantern Festival. The biggest difference lies mainly in the food eaten in the south and the north. On this day, the Southern people usually eat sweet rice ball, which is called “tangyuan”. While the Northern people usually eat dumplings.
But there are also some common customs. Such as lighting up various colors, shapes, and sizes of lanterns, solving riddles which are written on the lanterns in poems or classical Chinese, setting fireworks or Kongming lanterns in the sky. Family and love ones gather together enjoying these activities. People greeting and sending each other blessings. Laughter and songs are everywhere.
